The Summoning by Lynne Ewing

I remember being absolutely fascinated with this series as a young adult. It sparked my interest in Egyptian mythology, and rereading it I found that a lot of the more “adult themes” within had completely gone over my head.

The first book of the Sisters of Isis series by Lynne Ewing follows Sudi, a beautiful blonde haired, blue-eyed teen who is incredibly awkward and on a mission to find a boyfriend.

I’m sure I identified with her when I was little, as I was blonde and blue eyed and awkward too, however the teenage hormones explored throughout this book hadn’t quite hit me yet. Funny now I laugh at the obvious signs, but found it endearing to the character of Sudi, as well as a homage to the young teenage heart and what it values.

Though love interests abound for Sudi, it’s the fact that she is a Descendant of ancient Egyptian pharaohs that really hooked me. Along with her newfound friends; shy, infamous Meri and mysterious and intelligent Delilah, this book explores the power of sisterhood through the eyes of a 15-year-old girl. It highlights strong characters that offer wisdom and courage beyond their years and also explores the intricacies of Egyptian mythology which was SO COOL at the time. I’ve never found a book like this since, which makes it completely unique.

It’s easy to read, and would be a great way to introduce your own child to a new religion, but also the everyday struggles a teenage girl might face in today’s world. I’m excited to read the next book in the series and explore what other themes Ewing has to offer.

What’s Next: I’ll be reading and reviewing Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky. Stay tuned!
